ABSTRACT
Retronychia is the term used to describe ingrowth of the nail
plate into the proximal nail fold, followed by generation of
secondary nail plates below the original or primary nail plate,
producing chronic paronychia. It is related to repetitive local
trauma affecting the proximal nail matrix and is characterized
by growth arrest of the primary nail plate, subacute/chronic
proximal paronychia and xantonychia. Given the clinical suspicion
of the entity, the clinical diagnosis can be complemented
by image studies. Nail plate avulsion is the first-line treatment.
This article presents two cases of young patients (20 and 39
years) in which the classic triad of the disease was found, with
different presentations of retronychia, who suffered delay in
the definitive diagnosis and management of their condition.
