ABSTRACT
Background: dermatomycosis are the most common superficial
fungal infections worldwide, with tinea pedis and onychomycosis
being the most. Soccer players are constantly predisposed
to fungal infections due to the variability of individual
and environmental conditions to which they are constantly
exposed.
Objectives: to determine the prevalence and associated factors
of onychomycosis and
tinea pedis in soccer players from
Casanare, Colombia.
Methodology: epidemiological cross-sectional study, conducted
between February and March 2021 in soccer players
of the Club Atlético Real Paz of the municipality of Paz de Ariporo,
Casanare. It included a total of 32 players, 18 of whom
presented some type of lesion related to superficial mycosis.
A clinical survey was carried out containing questions related
to environmental, cultural and socioeconomic factors; direct
examination and culture were performed.
Results: the prevalence of mycosis in soccer players was
56.25%, of which 61.1% correspond to onychomycosis and
33.3% to
tinea pedis. 56.2% of the mycoses were caused by environmental
molds being
Scytalidium sp. the most frequent fungus
(18.7%), 40.6% by dermatophytes (
Trichophyton mentagrophytes
in 18.7%) and 3.1% by yeasts (
Candida albicans).
Conclusions: tinea pedis and onychomycosis were very frequent
in the population studied. As for the factors associated
with these pathologies, it was found that excessive sweating
and feet-wounds increased the risk of fungal infections.
