Study of sexual experiences in older adult women

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Sexuality occurs throughout life and exhibits different manifestations; however, it is mutilated in older adult women.
Objective: Analyze sexuality in older adult women who attend outpatient consultation at the Longevity, Aging and Health Research Center (CITED, Spanish acronym)
Method: Qualitative study, with a phenomenological approach about sexuality and the experiences associated with it, in 60 older adult women who attended the outpatient consultation at the Longevity, Aging and Health Research Center (CITED), in the second half of 2018.
Results: Older adult women define sexuality in a heterogeneous way. They give it great importance, despite considering it typical of younger ages, and prioritizing other more culturally accepted activities. They perceive themselves in a lower place in relation to men of this age, and the rest of the family. The prejudice that limits their satisfaction with the sex-erotic sphere of sexuality was identified as a form of gender violence in an important group of them.
Conclusions: Older adult women displace the dimension of the couple, and the sex-erotic relationships of their sexuality due to family demands, placing them in a lower social step, which translates into a manifestation of gender violence.
