ABSTRACT
Background: Hairy cell leukemia, along with diffuse splenic lymphoma, are mature
B-cell lymphoid disorders, the peculiar characteristic of which are the cytoplasmic
processes that give the appearance of a hairy cell. It is 4 to 5 times more frequent in
men than in women and represents 2% of all leukemias, the course of this disease is
indolent, asymptomatic cytopenias are usually found, on some occasions there are
constitutional symptoms, abdominal distention due to organomegaly.
Clinical case: A 37-year-old female patient in who hairy cell leukemia was diagnosed
after the study due to having fever of unknown origin.
Conclusions: Purine analogs with responses of up to 90-100% are recommended
as first-line. Not all newly diagnosed patients are eligible for treatment, symptomatic
disease is only monitored.
