ABSTRACT
Introduction: The treatment of upper urinary tract´s obstruction is a surgical one and there are multiple
therapeutic options. In spite of the appropriate use of minimally invasive techniques, there are still cases
with unfavorable results that should keep permanent urinary diversions. As an alternative, it has been
recommended the use of auto-expandable metal ureteral stents.
Objective: To show the preliminary results of the use of the Allium auto-expandable ureteral stent in
Cuba.
Material and methods: Descriptive and prospective study in 12 patients who received a placement of 13
Allium´s auto-expandable ureteral stents between 2018 and 2019. Descriptive statistics were applied such
as absolute frequency and percentage distribution.
Results: The average age was 49.4 years and 76.9 % were male. The most common cause of stenosis was
the repeated endoscopic treatment of urolithiasis (69.2 %). The 91.6% of the patients were discharged
the day after surgery. Complications were reported in four patients (30.7 %). The time of permanence of
the stent covered between nine and 24 months for an average of 18.2 months.
Conclusions: The positioning of an auto-expandable ureteral stent is a feasible and safe alternative for the
treatment of the upper urinary tract´s obstruction in selected patients. It is a minimally invasive
therapeutic option that should be considered in Cuba for patients who have other permanent urinary
diversions as JJ ureteral catheter or nephrostomy tube. It would be desirable a future evaluation
considering a longer period of the stent´s positioning.
