ABSTRACT
Introduction: The dynamic sentinel lymph node biopsy is an effective technique in the identification of
nodal metastases in patients with diagnosis of penile cancer during the early stages of the disease.
Objective: To assess the validity of the radioguided sentinel node biopsy´s technique in penile cancer.
Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study was conducted between
January 2017 and August 2019 at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology of Havana, where
there were studied six patients through a lymphatic mapping with sentinel node biopsy.
Results: In all the patients sentinel lymph nodes were located in the preoperative and transoperative
lymphography with the gamma probe. The transoperative histopathological report of sentinel lymph
nodes was the same as in the final report. Only one patient presented positive sentinel node of tumor
cells, representing 17 % of the sample. In the follow-up period no patient had a relapse. It was obtained a
100 % of sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value of the sample.
Conclusions: The lymphatic mapping with sentinel lymph node biopsy is a prognostic and staging tool
which is useful for patients with penile cancer without palpable lymph nodes during the physical and
radiological examination. It avoids subjecting them to a conventional lymph node dissection and its
complications.
