ABSTRACT
Introduction: Renal cell carcinoma is a major public health problem nowadays and it represents a 3 % of the neoplasms in the world's population. Despite the early detection, mortality rates are high. Up to 10% of the tumors are diagnosed in patients with tumor thrombus of the renal vein or the inferior vena cava. Objective: To evaluate the results of the patients operated on of kidney tumors with locally advanced venous disease.
Methods: It was carried out a retrospective study with longitudinal section of the results obtained in 12 patients with renal tumors and tumor thrombus of the inferior vena cava and the right atrium whom were operated on at "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Surgical Clinical Hospital between February 2006 and March 2018.
Results: It was predominant the male sex (75%) and the average age was 57 years. The right kidney prevailed (66.6%). The majority presented extension in I-II level. Two patients died (16.6%) in the mediate postoperative period. The 1-year survival rate was 83.3%. Two patients (16.6%) had metastases four years after surgery. At the end of the study, the 66.6% has been free of disease progression.
Conclusions: Despite the high morbidity and mortality, surgery is an option that offers a therapeutic possibility for local control of the disease.
