ABSTRACT
Introduction: Retinitis pigmentosa and glaucoma are scientifically challenging for its irregular and complex progression. Objective: to prove the importance of making a better use of the available diagnosis means for the study and follow-up of patients with RP and associated glaucoma. Method: descriptive and retrospective research of a series of cases between 2015 and 2019 in the Retinitis Pigmentosa Reference Center in Havana. The data bases and ophthalmological record of 138 patients were screened and 49 met the criteria to be included in the sample. They have their corrected visual acuity, tonometry, gonioscopy, perimetry and tomography measured, among others. Results: in the series, 48,9% were between 40 and 60 years of age and 26,5% has family backgrounds of glaucoma without Retinitis Pigmentosa; 30 had a corrected visual acuity over 0,6 and 34,7% had a visual field over 15º. In 78 eyes (79,6%) there is open angle and the glaucoma appeared 3,2 years after the debut of night blindness. The average thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer was below the 86 microns in 64 eyes (65,3%), a diminished rim volume and vertical index of excavation/disk are the most reliable indicators for the assessment of the damage caused by glaucoma. The reduction of the sensitivity in the retina was demonstrable particularly in the upper nasal quadrant in areas of the retina related to glaucoma. Conclusions: Making a better use of the diagnosis means in the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa and glaucoma, as proposed and made by professional staff, increases their professional skills and knowledge over these diseases that still have no cure for the worldwide scientific community.REFERENCES
