Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

ABSTRACT

Following an explanatory introduction about the peculiarities of these diseases and the special characteristics in pregnant women with approximate prevalence figures, each STD is described. The descriptions include the causal agent, mode of transmission, early and late clinical manifestations and the possibilities for precise diagnosis using specific laboratory tests. This is concluded with a discussion of treatment, mentioning antibacterials of choice and way of administration for adults, pregnant women and newborns. Special mention is given to the education of adolescents and young adults and the type of discussion that all physicians should have with sexually active couples.
The diseases described are AIDS, syphilis, chancroid, genital herpes, gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis in men and women, tricomoniasis and infections caused by the human papilloma virus with its implications in cervical-uterine cancer. In each chapter, special attention is given to prevention of the disease.
