ABSTRACT
Introduction: Clusia is one of the most widely studied genera in the Clusiaceae family. Clusia minor L. is an insufficiently studied wild shrub used in folk medicine to treat warts and vitiligo. In recent years, antioxidant activity has arisen great scientific interest in the field of pharmacology. Though a number of studies have been conducted about the antioxidant effects of this species, no conclusive results have so far been reported. Objective: Determine the content of phenols and flavonoids present in the leaves of the species Clusia minor L. and make a preliminary evaluation of its antioxidant activity.
Methods: Four extracts (A, B, C and E) were obtained from leaves of the species by maceration with the use of solvents in an increasing order of polarity (hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol) and directly with ethanol, respectively. Total phenol and flavonoid content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu and spectrophotometric testing with aluminum chloride, respectively. Antioxidant evaluation was performed by determining the sequestering capacity of the 2.2- diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazyl radical (DPPH) by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and the ferric-reducing assay.
Results: Quantification of total phenols and flavonoids in the leaves of the species was carried out for the first time, identifying their presence in extracts B, C and E. All the extracts displayed sequestering capacity of radical DPPH and ferro-reducing activity in vitro. Extracts E and B showed the highest DPPH radical sequestering and ferro-reducing capacity, respectively, in keeping with the content of total phenols and flavonoids in these extracts.
Conclusions: Results revealed the possible antioxidant effect of the species, which might be related to the presence of phenolic metabolites. Clusia minor could be a natural alternative for the development of new therapeutic agents.
