ABSTRACT
Introduction: Early childhood caries affects infants between six and 71 months of age, associated with poor oral hygiene and eating habits, causing aesthetic and functional problems.
Objective: Identify the incidence of caries and characteristics of pediatric patients treated at the Center for Dental Specialties (January 2015 to January 2020).
Material and methods: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study, with convenience sampling. The information was collected from 533 electronic files, 410 from the period from January 2015 to January 2020, age range 12 months to nine years old. The variables were age, gender, origin, systemic and oral diagnosis, type of dental care, degree of caries, dental treatment, and restorative material.
Results: The most frequent oral diagnosis was moderate ECC, the most affected group regarding age and gender was the 3 years old male with 18%. 23% had some systemic pathology, the most common was cleft lip and palate, and 77% were healthy.
Conclusions: This study is an aid to evaluate the behavior of ECC, it is the basis for the development of future research, to be able to develop educational programs and implement preventive measures to reduce ECC.
