Experience in the removal of foreign bodies in the airway by rigid bronchoscopy

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Foreign bodies in the airway have an incidence of 0.66 per 100,000, mainly in children under five years of age. Rigid bronchoscopy in children is the procedure of choice. Material and methods: Retrospective, observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study. We include rigid bronchoscopies from January 2015 to March 2020. Results: In 27 patients we found foreign bodies: peanut 9, metal 6, plastic 5, corn 4, beans 1, sugarcane 1, carrot 1; 16 had radiological signs: hyperinflation 5, radiopacity 5, bronchial thickening 3 and atelectasis 3. We found 15 in the right bronchus and 5 in the left, 4 trachea, 1 vocal cords, 1 larynx and 1 in carina. Conclusion: The rigid bronchoscope is effective, which is why we consider it the choice for extracting foreign bodies in the airway in children.
