White piedra of unusual location in a child

ABSTRACT

A case of "white piedra" (Trichosporon beigelli) in a child is presented. The disease, located in the pilous follicles of the head was initially misdiagnosed as pediculosis. The correct diagnosis was made examining some hairs previously reated with potassium chloride, Sabouraud's culture and Gram's stain. The fungus was further identified with the use of specific biochemical test for yeasts with a MicroScan apparatus.
