ABSTRACT
Introduction: The treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids ranges from hormonal treatment to uterine arteries embolization. The latter procedure is today a therapeutic alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy when treating uterine fibroids. Objectives: To review uterine arteries embolization regarding treatment, indications, advantages and disadvantages.
Data analysis: Pubmed/Medline, SciELO, EBSCO, HINARI, EMBASE, COCHRANE databases were consulted. Articles on the subject published from 2003 to 2019 were selected and they prove that uterine artery embolization is a therapeutic alternative when treating uterine fibroids, which has evolved the technique and embolizing materials, ranging from gel foam to microspheres, allowing better result in the elimination of symptoms and decreasing fibroids size.
Conclusions: Uterine artery embolization for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids is a minimally invasive and effective method, with minimum of complications and a rapid recovery that allows the preservation of the uterus.
