ABSTRACT
Various studies demonstrated that the carrier of intestinal
Taenia solium in the household or community at large is the main risk factor for acquiring cysticercosis. Based on this evidence, it was decided to evaluate the presence of taeniasis in food outlet workers who work within the UNAM Campus and in the immediate environs of the National Polytechnical Institute in Santo Tomas, both located in Mexico City.
A survey of food outlet workers regarding hygiene practices, health condition and knowledge of taeniasis and cysticercosis was employed. The study also included 40 microbiological tests of the hands of the workers, as well as 70 fecal samples looking for signs of
Taenia coproantigens. The survey results showed significant tests of the hands detected normal flora. One of the workers from Santo Tomas tested positive for
Taenia coproantigens.
