ABSTRACT
Esophageal lesions caused by ingestion of caustic substances continue to be a frequent problem in pediatrics. Approximately 56% of the lesions are serious although estenosis is variable. Some cases require unavoidable surgery but it is difficult to choose the most suitable technique in the absence of careful and thorough evaluation. This study compared traditional radiography using endoscopy following a barium meal with anterograde and retrograde endoscopy following a barium meal, in addition to taking exact measurements of the length of the estenosis.
The results showed a good correlation for the combined procedure of anterograde-retrograde endoscopy, as opposed to a barium meal alone. This combined procedure provides a very useful, pre-operative evaluation.
