ABSTRACT
Onychomycosis is the most common fungal nail infection,
caused by dermatophytes, yeasts and non-dermatophyte filamentous
fungi. The risk factors identified for its development
are: age, male gender, nail trauma, use of tight footwear, sports
practices such as swimming, taking showers in public bathrooms,
among others. Despite being seen as an aesthetic condition, it
should not be unnoticed, especially in vulnerable groups, such
as patients with diabetes mellitus, in whom it should be considered
a public health issue, due to its high prevalence, difficulty
in management, poor therapeutic adherence and high rates of
recurrence; it might cause a significant social and financial impact
on the public health. An early diagnosis and treatment of
onychomycosis in this group would reduce the incidence of
complications such as nail dystrophy, foot ulcers, osteomyelitis,
and limb amputation.
The objective of this article is to recognize the importance
of onychomycosis as a causal entity of morbidity in patients
with diabetes and to recommend educational preventive strategies
for patients in order to reduce complications and improve
quality of life.
