ABSTRACT
Introduction: atopic dermatitis (AD) is a very frequent,
chronic, multifactorial inflammatory skin disease. Therapeutic
patient education (TPE) is a patient-centered process that implies
the transfer of necessary information and skills to manage
disease effectively.
Objectives: should be included in tpe interventions for patients
with ad.
Material and methods: an expert consensus using Delphi
panel methodology was performed. Pediatric dermatologists
and dermatologists with previous experience using TPE for ad
were included. Consensus was achieved if ≥80% experts evaluated
declarations in the upper tertile of a Likert scale; four
rounds of evaluation were held and, after each one, results
were presented using descriptive statistics and graphics. Declarations
where consensus was not achieved, were evaluated/
modified according to experts’ comments, and were added in
the following round.
Results: We included 16 pediatric dermatologists/dermatologist
in the expert panel. Thirty-one questions were formulated
based on existing literature about the use of TPE in ad and sent
to experts. On subsequent rounds, declarations constructed
with the answers to these questions were evaluated. A docu
ment with all 19 recommendations obtained through consensus
that should be included in tpe interventions for ad was made.
Conclusions: tpe is essential for the medical care of patients
with ad. It should include explanations about physiopathology,
general skin care measures and lifestyle changes, and existing
treatments.
