ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the sensory clinical manifestations and the evolution of a patient with a rare variant of Guillain Barre syndrome.
Clinical case report: Patient with acute sensory demyelinating polyneuropathy. He showed infectious condition prior to the onset of the neurological disorder. The sensory symptoms began acutely in the bilateral gluteal region, as well as in both lower limbs; intense burning and painful sensation in the perianal regions; tingling sensation and slight low back pain. These manifestations evolved during 21 days; then symptoms stabilized within two weeks; and after this stage the recovery began. The patient did not show motor symptoms and signs, which was supported through the nerve conduction study. The patient showed good recovery and favorable response to immunosuppressive steroid treatment.
Conclusions: Guillain Barre syndrome constitutes an spectrum of different clinical forms of appearance that meet series of general criteria. The sensory forms, despite being infrequent, can appear and, at times, are not thought about. A patient with this form was reported, who had good response to treatment and favorable evolution.
