ABSTRACT
Introduction: Increasing resistance of respiratory pathogens to several antimicrobials has been reported in Mexico. Gatifloxacin (GAT) is a new 8-methoxy fluoroquinolone with an excellent activity the same
in vivo as
in vitro against prevalent respiratory pathogens.
Material and methods: To assess GAT activity, 211 respiratory pathogens strains were tested by disk diffusion according to NCCLS for a total of: 36
Haemophilus influenzae, 32
Streptococcus pneumoniae, 27
Moraxella catarrhalis, 55
Streptococcus pyogenes and 61
Staphylococcus aureus strains, isolated from ambulatory and hospitalized patients with respiratory tract infections from August 1999 to January 2000 in Mexico City.
Results: Gatifloxacin presented an excellent antimicrobial activity from range of 97-100 % of susceptibility against
Streptococcus pneumoniae,
Haemophilus influenzae,
Moraxella catarrhalis and
Staphylococcus aureus. These pathogens presented a high resistance to ampicillin (22 to 98 %).
Conclusions: The results obtained confirm that Gatifloxacin has a high susceptibility against main respiratory vias pathogens compared with other antimicrobials of common use. It is recommended to periodically realize an strict local monitoring on the susceptibility profiles, in order to practice a better selection for the antimicrobial therapeutic.
