ABSTRACT
Background: Hospital-acquired infections represent a constant public health
problem due to their relationship with increment in mortality, health-care costs, labor
disability and length of stay hospital.
Objectivo: To determine the most relevant epidemiological indicators, risk factors,
mortality, microbiology and antibiotic-resistance patterns in patients with hospitalacquired
pneumonia at Hospital Angeles Pedregal, Mexico City, between January 1,
2016 and February 28, 2019.
Materials and Methods: A retrospective, epidemiology study, using data from
Nosocomial-Infections-Control Office from January 1st, 2016 to February 28th, 2019 at
Hospital Angeles Pedregal, Mexico City. Patients were included by using IDSA definitions
of Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia and Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia and Mexican
National Norm for Nosocomial Infections.
Results: Seventy-two cases of both hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilatorassociated
pneumonia were obtained. Rate of global incidence was 1.8 cases per
1000 patients and a cumulative incidence of 42.1 cases per 1000 patients. The most
common pathogens were gram-negative rods.
P. aeruginosa and
S. maltophilia were the
most prevalent. In the case of
P. aeruginosa it was obtained resistance to ceftriaxone,
ceftazidime, cefepime, ciprofloxacin, imipenem and meropenem.
Conclusions: It is important to recognize the risk factors most associated with the
appearance of hospital-acquired pneumonia, seeking to prevent new cases.
