ABSTRACT
Introduction: Listeriosis is a disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Its mortality increases in its invasive form, hence the need for early diagnosis and timely treatment. Objective: To assess the treatment and evolution in a patient with Listeria monocytogenes meningoencephalitis.
Case report: A 57-year-old female patient with a pathological history of systemic lupus erythematosus, lupus nephritis and arterial hypertension, treated with immunosuppressants, who was admitted to Victoria Hospital in Republic of Seychelles for vomiting and agitation. In turn, she presented a generalized tonic-clonic seizure and hemorrhagic skin. She was evaluated by a multidisciplinary team. After blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures, she was diagnosed with Listeria monocytogenes meningoencephalitis. She was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. Treating her with specific antimicrobial combined, ampicillin and gentamicin, her condition favorably evolved. Due to subsequent complications, the patient died of multiorgan dysfunction syndrome.
Conclusions: The specific treatment combined with ampicillin and gentamicin was effective in this patient. However, she later died as a result of other complications.
