ABSTRACT
The pederin contained in the
hemolymph of Paederus spp is
able of producing severe lesions
in the epidermis of multiple body
regions, as well as in the ocular
area, including the conjunctiva.
Its diagnosis is mainly clinical
taking into consideration the
epidemiological variables
of time, place and person.
Differential diagnosis should
be performed considering
other aspects as infectious
and corrosive agents to avoid
unecessary use of antibiotics
and corticosteroids. This article
presents a synthesis of the
agent, pathology, differential
diagnosis and protective
measures, illustrated with
images of the coleopteron and
affected patients in Esparza,
province of Puntarenas, Costa
Rica.
