ABSTRACT
Sarcopenia is a skeletal muscle illness characterized
by accelerated loss of muscle mass and low muscle
function. The EWGSOP2 defines it as a progressive
and generalized skeletal muscle disorder associated
with increase in falls, fractures, physical disability
and mortality. It commonly affects older adults,
and is more frequently found in women. In Mexico,
sarcopenia is relevant due to an accelerated process
of population ageing that increases the older adults
population.
Objective: To determine the prevalence
of sarcopenia among the women pertaining to the
Dulces Amigos group at the Social, Epidemiological
and Health Services Research Unit.
Material and
methods: The diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia,
updated by the EWGSOP2 in 2018, were used to
evaluate the presence of sarcopenia in women of 58
years or older, members of the Dulces Amigos group
at the UISESS.
Results: A prevalence of sarcopenia
of 0 was found amongst the group. There was
significative association between physical activity and
a normal result in the SPPB result (p<0.05). There was
no significative association found between BMI and
SPPB result.
Conclusions: Sarcopenia is a progressive
skeletal muscle disorder affecting older people that
can be prevented with physical activity and nutritional
interventions. Public policies are needed to support
healthy and active ageing, as well as screening for
conditions like sarcopenia and frailty in older adults
assisting the first level of attention.
