ABSTRACT
Background. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important cause of illness and death, particularly in children under
four years of age.
Objective. To determine the frequency of rsv infections and other respiratory pathogens in a regional hospital.
Methods. Descriptive study of respiratory specimens submitted for multiple molecular test (NAAT) from patients with
acute respiratory infection in the period from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019.
Results. 297 specimens from patients with a median age of 11.2 months were studied, with an interquartile range
(IQR) of 3-35 months. RSV predominated, followed by rhinovirus/enterovirus. The coexistence of more than one microorganism
in a test was found in some samples; in 65 specimens (21.8%) two microorganisms were found and in four
(1.3%) three were found.
Bordetella sp. was identified in 12 (4%) specimens. Regarding RSV, the median age in months
was 7.5 and IQR 2-22 months. RSV and coronaviruses predominated in winter, rhinoviruses/enteroviruses predominated
between autumn and winter.
Discussion. RSV is the pathogen most frequently detected by the naat test in acute conditions, followed by rhinovirus/
enterovirus. Viruses represent the main pathogens of acute respiratory diseases.
