Thiazolidinediones: Benefits and risks

ABSTRACT
Thiazolidinediones represent a new class of oral hypoglycemic agents with insulin sensitizing actions. In several trials, these agents have shown effects on lipid metabolism, cellular differentiation and some cardiovascular risk factors. In this paper, we review the literature and analyse, in clinical perspective some data about the benefits of this group of drugs in the control and prevention of diabetes in comparison to some other available agents. At present, we are still lacking information on the long-term benefits and risks of these drugs.
