ABSTRACT
This review article presents a brief historical perspective of diagnostic criteria used for diabetes mellitus. The current diagnostic recommendations from the American Diabetes Association and from the World Health Organization differs in the viewpoint about the use of oral glucose tolerance test, we analyze in a simple way the reasons for use or not the oral glucose tolerance test in the patient as an individual. We also recommend to use the oral challenge in all Mexican pregnant patients with or without any other risk factor.
