ABSTRACT
Cytogenetic studies are frequently used in the diagnosis of pathologies causing chromosomal instability. Even when chromosomal instability disorders are mostly genetic in origin, is unknowledgeable that some viral infections cause chromosomal instability. A common finding in these patients is microcephaly. The aim of this work was to analize the association of microcephaly with chromosomal instability promoted by monogenic diseases as well as viral infections. Pubmed database was consulted for chromosomal instability syndromes and virus infections in prenatal studies where microcephaly was present as a clinical sign. The OMIM site was used for a case by case analysis. The frequently reported association of this clinical sign with intellectual disability in children from mothers infected with Zika during pregnancy is important to analyze the instability effect on the genome of these patients.
