ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to establish the reference values for insulin, lipids and body mass index (BMI) and the correlation among this parameters. Ninety-eight subjects clinically healthy participated, 54 men and 48 women, aged 16-18. Serum and plasma 12-hr-fasting samples were obtained. Insulin levels were measured in serum by radioimmunoassay with Coat-A-Count (DPC), total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglycerides by dry chemistry method Reflotrón (Roche), low density lipoproteins (LDL) according to Friedwald formula. Body mass index (BMI) was adjusted to the Quetelet values. The reference values, according to the 85 percentil were: Insulin: 18.1µU/mL, BMI: 26.4, triglycerides: 153.0 mg/dL, LDL: 137.1 mg/dL HDL: 56.8 mg/dL and cholesterol: 207 mg/dL. Forty percent of the studied population had HDL levels under 39 mg/dL, value established by the Diabetes Group and considered as an important risk to present microvascular disease. Four percent of the studied population had hypertriglyceridemia and 8% hyperinsulinemia, considered as the value over 19.3 µU/mL (mean ± 1 standard deviation). Insulin levels correlated positively with triglycerides levels (r = 0.48, p‹0.001) and with BMI (r = 0.37, p‹0.001). These results suggest that this youths had atherosclerosis and glucose intolerance at the time of the study.
