ABSTRACT
Introduction: Diabetes is considered a public health concern worldwide, and its management requires a pharmacological and lifestyle approach. Patient adherence to treatment turns out to be a determining factor to guarantee the success of the therapy and includes aspects related to medication, attendance at medical appointments, diet, and physical exercise. Objective: To describe patient adherence to treatment within the diabetes program of an institution that provides healthcare services in Jamundí (Valle) Municipality, Colombia.
Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was carried out, in which a survey was applied including 25 questions related to sociodemographic characteristics, adherence to treatment, together with the application of the Morisky-Green test. Adherence was assessed in 57 diabetic patients belonging to the promotion and prevention program of an institution that provides healthcare services in Jamundí (Valle) Municipality.
Results: Low patient adherence (38.6%) to pharmacological treatment was found. Additionally, 61.4% of the patients were observed to have a healthy diet, while only 28.1% carried out frequent physical activity. There was evidence that 10.5% of the patients live in rural areas, and that most of the non-adherent ones turned out to have very low economic income, which could represent a difficulty for transportation and access to healthcare services. The study revealed great lack of knowledge about the disease by the patients, an aspect that could be crucial for adherence to treatment.
Conclusion: Low adherence of diabetic patients to treatment can cause therapeutic failure; its main causes are associated with economic factors, difficulty in accessing healthcare services, unhealthy lifestyles, and ignorance about their disease.
