ABSTRACT

Syphilis is an infection caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum that is transmitted by direct contact with a sexual infectious lesion or by transplacental route during pregnancy. It has been called the “great imitator” since it has a diversity of cutaneous manifestations. Secondary syphilis can occur from the second to eighth week after the initial injury and is characterized by skin manifestations known as syphilides; however, affectations can also be found at the oropharynx or systemic level. Diagnosis is made by non-treponemal and treponemal serological tests; however, in some patients non-treponemal tests, mainly VDRL, can be negative, so it is important to consider the presence of the prozone phenomenon. Benzathine penicillin g remains the gold standard of treatment for patients with secondary syphilis, who are not allergic, including patients with HIV. The educational plan, hygiene measures and sexual education are fundamental bases to prevent this disease.
