ABSTRACT
Objective: To report a case of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to varicella pneumonia.
Design: Case report.
Setting: ICU of a private hospital, Queretaro, Queretaro; Mexico.
Patient: A 28-yrs-old patient with varicella pneumonia, ARDS and acute renal failure.
Interventions: Mechanical ventilation support, hemodialysis, use of acyclovir.
Measurements and main results: Patient develops severe respiratory failure, acute non oliguric renal failure, muscular weakness, increase of creatine kinase and ARDS (PaO2/FIO2, 48). He was discharged at 32th ICU stay with good recovery of multiple failure dysfunction. Conclusion: Mortality rate due to varicella pneumonia complicated by ARDS is high, but the use of acyclovir may be change the outcome.
