ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the clinical features of HELLP syndrome and the perinatal complications.
Design: Retrospective study.
Setting: ICU of an obstetrical and gynecological hospital of tertiary care, Mexico City.
Patients: Fifty-two patients admitted to the ICU during a two-year period were enrolled.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and main results: The incidence of HELLP syndrome was 0.69% in all births (alive). HELLP syndrome was present respectively in 39.8% and 46.15%, before and after delivery. The main obstetrics complications were: eclampsia 39.8 vs
25%, disseminated intravascular coagulation 17.8% vs
4.16%, acute renal failure 57% vs
41.7%, before and after delivery, respectively; two cases of hepatic subcapsular hematoma rupture and one case of cerebral hemorrhage were observed. Maternal mortality rate was 5.7%.
Conclusion: HELLP syndrome is a serious life-threatening complication in preeclampsia patients.
