ABSTRACT
Background: The main mechanism of Zika transmission is through blood-sucking
arthropod vectors. The Zika virus has been isolated from
Aedes africanus, Aedes luteocephalus,
Aedes vittatus, Aedes albopictus, Aedes furcifer and
Aedes aegypti, the
latter being the main vector in the American continent and in the current epidemic
that began in Brazil in 2015.
Clinical case: A 25-year-old female patient, medical resident, who accidentally
punctured her left hand with a needle containing cerebrospinal fluid from a hospitalized
girl with virus encephalitis. Six days later patient started with a small nodule at
the site of the lesion. Arthralgia, myalgia, fever of 38ºC, exanthema and conjunctivitis
were added 30 days after. Zika diagnosis was confirmed with RT-PCR on both. The
entomological study showed no evidence of the vector.
Conclusions: As we learn more about how the Zika virus is transmitted, strategies
of biosafety must be present in health workers.
