ABSTRACT
Background: It is important to know the preoperative anxiety to improve adaptation
before and after the surgical process, generating an adequate management of
coping strategies and the care provided to the patient as a biopsychosocial entity.
In Mexico, 25% of patients have preoperative anxiety, of which up to 40% require
anxiolytic treatment.
Objective: To determine the pre-surgical anxiety levels in patients undergoing surgery,
and to identify the predisposing factors that generate anxiety in the Naval Medical
Center (CEMENAV).
Materials and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, prospective, analytical
study assessing the level of preoperative anxiety in adult patients who entered to the
operating room, the predisposing factors were identified.
Results: There were included 152 patients. We observed 99.3% of mild anxiety and
0.7% of moderate anxiety with the Spielberger scale. The predisposing factors were:
age, sex, education level, marital status, type of anesthesia and surgery.
Conclusions: The management of information needs on the intervention and anesthesia
in patients is crucial to reduce the level of pre-surgical anxiety.
