ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the hemostatic agent ethamsylate to decrease
transurgical bleeding in adenotonsillectomy.
Materials and Methods: An open, descriptive, quasi-experimental study was
conducted from January to June 2019. Two groups were randomly conformed: ethamsylate
group and control group. The amount of trans-surgical bleeding during adenotonsillectomy
was analyzed.
Results: A total of 40 patients were included, 20 to the group of ethamsylate and
the other 20 to the control group. The mean age in the control group was 6.25 ± 1.71
years and in the ethamsylate group it was 6.75 ± 1.83 years. Trans-surgical bleeding
was calculated in both surgeries with gauze counting, obtaining in the control group
35.5 ± 8.2 mL and in the experimental group 16.75 ± 3.35 mL, which was statistically
significant (p ‹ 0.05%).
Conclusions: It was demonstrated reduced transurgical bleeding with the administration
of ethamsylate during transurgical period of adenotonsillectomy.
