ABSTRACT
Traumatic loss of thumbs represent a 40 to 50 percent of the functional capability of the hand. Plastic surgeons are forced to perform sophisticated reconstructive procedures such as microsurgical transference of the first or second toe. The main objective was to determine vascular pattern of the first dorsal metatarsal artery in Mexicans. Fifty legs of corpses without vascular pathology were dissected to describe anatomic variations of the first dorsal metatarsal artery at the Pathology Department of Mexico’s General Hospital. The most frequently seen vascular pattern in Mexican population (55%) is a deep plantar distribution of the first dorsal metatarsal artery. Therefore, a new classification of the vascular pattern in the Mexican population is proposed.
