Neumonitis por Pneumocystis carinii. A propósito de un caso fatal

RESUMEN
La incidencia de neumonía por
Pneumocystis carinii en niños con VIH-SIDA ha motivado la investigación clínica y de laboratorio hacia este microorganismo, para el diagnóstico, tratamientos y prevención de la enfermedad que ocasiona. Se presenta el caso de un preescolar con esta enfermedad, la investigación clínico-patológica que dio lugar para identificar el
P. carinii, las particularidades histopatológicas que caracterizan el daño que produce en los tejidos y la ultraestructura de este microorganismo. Se revisan los procedimientos de laboratorio disponibles para su diagnóstico y se destaca el desarrollo de anticuerpos monoclonales fluorescentes y la reacción en cadena de polimerasa. También se hace mención a la quimioterapia, con la combinación trimetoprim-sulfametoxazol (TMP-SMZ) y otras alternativas terapéuticas, y a las medidas de prevención.
