En la actualidad, dentro de las tres primeras causas de muerte en la población de México y del mundo están las enfermedades cardiovasculares.1 En México más de 21 mil muertes fueron atribuidas a causas cardiovasculares en el año 2000, lo que corresponde al 19.23% del total de la mortalidad en la República Mexicana (n = 110,636).2
