Prevención y tratamiento de la desnutrición en niños con VIH

RESUMEN
Se revisan los conocimientos que fundamentan las decisiones para la alimentación de los enfermos con VIH/SIDA; se hace mención a los aspectos particulares que deben ser considerados en los niños. En la etapa inicial, cuando aún la enfermedad no está presente, se hace especial referencia a un plan dietético individualizado, en el que figuren alimentos de todos los grupos (según el esquema con el cual se acostumbra agruparlos) para asegurar un aporte adecuado de energía, proteínas, vitaminas y minerales, procurando que éstos sean higiénicamente manejados para evitar infecciones. Una vez que se manifiesta la enfermedad, se hace énfasis en que las indicaciones dietéticas sean acordes con las limitaciones del paciente para digerir y absorber correctamente los nutrimentos. Ante tal circunstancia se recomienda el empleo de fórmulas suplementarias de alta densidad energética que aportan a su vez cantidades generosas de vitaminas y minerales.
