RESUMEN
Introduction: Nursing staffs should be well-trained in the preparation of the patient who is to undergo a surgical intervention for gastrointestinal conditions or for investigative purposes, to achieve an excellent guy irrigation.Objective: To evaluate the quality of the nursing technique "gut irrigation" in pediatric surgery.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was performed at the Pediatric Surgery Service of Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola General Teaching Provincial Hospital in Ciego de Ávila, in the period 2010-2013. The universe consisted of 74 patients who required bowel cleansing. The quality of the technique was assessed as excellent, good, fair and poor. The information was obtained from the medical history and processed with the use of absolute frequencies and percentages.
Results: 67.56% of the children were under six years of age, 71.62% were males, 32.43% of the patients were prepared in the colon cleanse for diagnostic purposes and 67.56% for surgical purposes. 100.00% of the "gastrocolysis for colostomy closure" procedures performed were excellent, and 98.64% of the procedures "total bowel irrigation for other procedures" were assessed.
Conclusions: The technique of nursing "gut irrigation" in pediatric surgery performed with the procedures of gastrocolysis and total bowel irrigation for other procedures was assessed as of high quality. The experience of the nursing staff is remarkable, evidenced in the excellent results obtained.
