Los nódulos tiroideos son un hallazgo común en la población general, en especial en las mujeres y la incidencia ha ido en aumento en años recientes. Los nódulos tiroideos se pueden identificar clínicamente por palpación entre 4 y 7% de los adultos; sin embargo, son detectados de manera incidental hasta en 40% de los pacientes que son sometidos a estudios de imagen por otros motivos.4 Algunas investigaciones estiman que de 20 a 76% de la población general tiene al menos un nódulo tiroideo y la incidencia real puede ser aún mayor, ya que más nódulos se pueden identificar por estudios de imagen que los que es posible palpar.
