«Mi paciente tiene hipertensión arterial, ¿lo suspendo o qué estrategias de manejo existen?»

A nivel mundial, la hipertensión arterial sistémica (HAS) es el mayor factor de riesgo de mortalidad e incapacidad, se asocia con eventos cerebrovasculares, infarto agudo al miocardio y falla renal; la prevalencia incrementa con la edad. En Estados Unidos, 79% de los hombres y 85% de las mujeres mayores de 75 años son hipertensos. Se estima que 30% de la población adulta ignora ser hipertenso y, de los hipertensos existentes, 40% toma su tratamiento de manera irregular o son hipertensos mal controlados. ENSANUT MC 2016 reportó la incidencia de 25.5% en la población mexicana, 40% de la población encuestada no se conocía hipertenso. En sala de operaciones, el número de pacientes con HAS es cada vez mayor y en muchos de los casos no tenían el diagnóstico previo de la misma.
