La joven Denise Darval fue atropellada por un automóvil en el otoño de 1967, y para el 2 de diciembre sus médicos dictaminaronque tenía muerte cerebral. Esta tragedia pudiera
pasar inadvertida si no fuera porque ella, seconvirtió en el primer ser humano cuyo corazónlatió en 2 personas diferentes (fuera de todo romanticismobecqueriano); toda su vida dentro desu cuerpo y durante 18 días en el pecho de Louis
Washkansky, quien era un paciente diabético y fumador que moría por una grave insuficiencia coronaria. El joven cirujano Christiaan Barnard durante la noche del 2 al 3 de diciembre de 1967 realizó con éxito el primer trasplante cardíaco ortotópico humano a humano en un quirófano del Groote Schuur Hospital en Sudáfrica. Aunque el Dr. Barnard recibió el crédito mundialmente, no hay que olvidar el primer intento del Dr. James Hardy al trasplantar (en paralelo) un corazón de chimpancé a un ser humano, el cual murió en la mesa de operaciones, en 1964.
