RESUMEN
La cirugía general ha sido la primera especialidad de la medicina. En nuestros días se ha fragmentado en un número cada vez mayor de especialidades y de super-especialidades a tal punto que ha ido perdiendo uno por uno sus campos de acción. ¿Cuál será el futuro de la cirugía general? ¿Cómo repercutirá ello en la enseñanza? Vista por los profesores de cirugía nuestra especialidad, como lo que era todavía a mediados de siglo, va desapareciendo y limitándose a campos muy reducidos. Desde el punto de vista de la docencia es probable que esta disciplina pronto se convierta en sólo un par de años de enseñanza básica, para dar fundamento y solidez al residente antes de que tome la especialidad de su elección.
