RESUMEN
Las enfermedades diarreicas agudas (EDA) son una de las principales causas de morbilidad y mortalidad a nivel mundial, particularmente en el grupo de niños menores de cinco años. A pesar de que los programas de control de las EDA han logrado disminuir el impacto de estas infecciones en las últimas tres décadas, dicha reducción no ha sido homogénea en los países que conforman Latinoamérica. La heterogeneidad en los resultados se debe a la amplia diversidad política, económica, social, cultural y de salud. Por lo tanto, en la Sociedad Latinoamericana de Infectología Pediátrica (SLIPE) consideramos que es necesario contar con un Comité de Enfermedades Diarreicas (CED), que deberá ser un eje fundamental en el desarrollo de acciones de promoción y prevención de las EDA. El CED deberá desarrollar documentos y consensos que señalen las estrategias y líneas de acción claras que coadyuven al fortalecimiento en el manejo y prevención de las EDA.
