Actualmente, el cáncer se ha colocado como la segunda causa de muerte. Para la mayoría de los tumores sólidos, la cirugía representa la piedra angular en el tratamiento, junto con la quimioterapia y radioterapia; sin embargo, se estima que entre 30 y 40% de los pacientes sometidos cirugía mueran a causa de enfermedad metastásica, a pesar de la remoción del tumor primario.
Distintos grupos recientemente han hecho la idea de puntualizar que los mecanismos protumorigénicos involucrados en el período perioperatorio pueden proveer una pista hacia nuevas formas de mejorar los desenlaces en el paciente oncológico. Por tanto, el rol de los factores perioperatorios, incluyendo anestesia, transfusión de hemoderivados, hipotermia y complicaciones perioperatorias, ha sido señalado como probables factores deletéreos que pudieran contribuir a la recurrencia temprana.
