RESUMEN
La medicina del sueño se encarga de estudiar los trastornos respiratorios del sueño, padecimientos que han tomado un especial
interés en el profesional de la salud oral y en especial el Síndrome de Apnea-Hipoapnea del Sueño (SAHS), problema que ha incrementado
actualmente en todo el mundo y que desafortunadamente un gran número de pacientes aún no han sido diagnosticados y
se sabe que cuando la apena-hipoapnea no es contralada puede llegar a producir secuelas significativas tanto en la salud general
como psicomotoras y sociales.
El papel que el odontólogo puede potencialmente asumir en la medicina del sueño se puede resumir en dos apartados. El primero,
de reconocimiento y detección de la existencia de un posible trastorno del sueño que pueda afectar a la salud del paciente; éste es
asesorado acerca de la situación y referido para la evaluación y atención definitiva por otros profesionales de la salud. Y el segundo,
es su implicación en el tratamiento de este padecimiento utilizando dispositivos de avance mandibular, todo a través de un enfoque
multidisciplinario.
El objetivo del trabajo es mostrar al odontólogo los conocimientos mínimos sobre el Síndrome de Apnea-Hipoapnea del Sueño y a su
vez proporcionar una guía de cómo proceder en caso de que se presente a su consulta un paciente con este padecimiento.
