Edulcorantes no calóricos en la edad pediátrica: análisis de la evidencia científica

RESUMEN
Los edulcorantes no calóricos son aditivos alimentarios cuya función tecnológica es proporcionar sabor dulce a los alimentos, pero con un valor energético nulo o muy bajo. Existen dudas entre los consumidores sobre los riesgos para la salud que podrían estar asociados al uso de edulcorantes no calóricos. En la comunidad pediátrica hay interés en el cuerpo de investigación publicado que evalúa la seguridad y el posible uso de estos aditivos en niños sanos y en algunas situaciones patológicas. Después de una extensa revisión de la literatura y clasificación de la evidencia disponible, en este artículo, un grupo de trabajo intenta proporcionar a los profesionales de la salud, en particular a los pediatras, conclusiones basadas en la evaluación y la calidad de la literatura científica actual. El papel de los edulcorantes no calóricos en la infancia se integró después de revisar una serie de temas de interés que fueron objeto del análisis crítico del grupo de trabajo: su seguridad toxicológica, el impacto potencial en la obesidad y en el balance energético, la compensación calórica, en la diabetes mellitus, carcinogenicidad, teratogenicidad, alergias, fenilcetonuria, efectos gastrointestinales, metabolismo mineral y caries dental.
