RESUMEN
El insomnio es altamente prevalente en la población, y más
en los adultos mayores. Cerca de 50% de la población lo
padece, y es un problema que se asocia con una serie de
alteraciones: disminución de la capacidad física, problemas
de concentración y atención, múltiples patologías se exacerban,
lo que acaba produciendo una disminución de la
calidad de vida de la personas. Así mismo se interrelaciona
con múltiples problemas tanto físicos, como psicológicos
y sociales que pueden agravar o ser causa a su vez de las
alteraciones del sueño.
Reconocer los problemas del sueño y clasificarlos adecuadamente
permite determinar la necesidad o no de estudios
complementarios, seleccionar el manejo más adecuado en
forma individual, recomendar el manejo no farmacológico
(terapia cognitivo conductual, manejo del ambiente), y si
fuera necesario, determinar el tipo de fármaco más adecuado
en función de la asociación existente con otras patologías
(enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica [EPOC], depresión,
ansiedad, síndrome de piernas inquietas, etc.).

La pequeña revisión que se presenta tiene como objetivo
presentar al médico general las bases para enfrentarse al
paciente adulto mayor que padece de alteraciones del sueño.
Sin pasar por alto que existen cambios producidos por el
envejecimiento que ya de por sí modifican el ciclo sueñovigilia,
además de considerar los cambios psicosociales que
se presentan.
